Million Hoodies march for Trayvon Martin, March 21 2012 Fight the new Jim Crow My work requires the direct engagement in the community. I observe the world with concern for the future and express my anxiety in my paintings. Turning the lens on myself, I continually strive to do less harm in the world by changing my behavior and try to expose others to reality which they avoid through television and repetitive lifestyle. The will and power to fight against oppression and racism grows as more young victims are slain simply because they look suspicious and other stereotypes like being a person of color. San Francisco and the Bay Area has long been a place of political refuge, artistic growth and social change. This image was taken at the Million Hoodie march for Trayvon Martin, March 21, 2012. As a Xicana impressionist artist I constantly take pictures every where I go, as many Bay Area residents know, the camera is a weapon and tool to communicate, and educate a society that is open to change. The title refers to the new type of race war, killing Indigenous people, Middle Eastern brothers and sisters, people in Africa and our youth here in the United States. This watercolor depicts the Iconic march that shed light in a storm of controlled media where corruption and greed are the main characteristic of policies, justice and currency. As a daughter of two migrants from Michoacan Mexico many injustices happen before my eyes. The only thing I can do is document and express in paintings the spontaneous reaction to the oppression that is felt by the whole globe. Though we are many, we are all connected. This painting illustrates the parallel between speaking out in hopes of healing and causing change that must be made in order to free our souls from the deception and de-humanisation that surrounds us.
